The Unindexed World: On H.G. Wells and the Dream of a Planetary Brain
Long before we wrestled with tabs, algorithms, and the weight of our digital gardens, a visionary novelist saw the coming crisis of knowledge. In 1937, H.G. Wells, better known for his tales of Martian invasions and time machines, delivered a series of lectures that would be published as "World Brain." His subject was not science fiction, but a pressing societal ailment: the world’s knowledge was growing at an unmanageable rate, yet it remained scattered, disorganized, and inaccessible to the common person. He saw our modern dilemma of information overload a century before it flooded our browsers.
Wells envisioned a permanent, world encyclopedia, a "central clearing-house of ideas and knowledge." This wasn't just a bigger library; it was to be a dynamic, constantly updated "mental membrane" for the entire planet. He imagined a universal system of indexing and cross-referencing that would allow anyone, anywhere, to access the sum of human understanding. In essence, he dreamed of a decentralized, collective intelligence—a proto-internet, but one with a specific, pedagogical purpose. His vision was less about connection for connection’s sake and more about creating a streamlined, authoritative source for world education.
Reading Wells’s proposal today is a strange experience. On one hand, he appears breathtakingly prescient. We have, in many ways, built his World Brain. A student with a smartphone has access to more information than Wells’s entire encyclopedic committee could have imagined. Wikipedia, Google Scholar, and vast digital archives are the inheritors of his idea. The hyperlink is the very mechanism of cross-referencing he described.
Yet, Wells’s dream has curdled in the execution. He imagined his system would be curated by a "world directory of specialists," a kind of benign, scholarly priesthood dedicated to clarity and truth. He could not have foreseen the cacophony of the open web, where misinformation thrives alongside peer-reviewed science, where the authority of a source is often determined by an opaque algorithm optimized for engagement, not enlightenment. Our planetary brain is not a unified consciousness but a fractured, argumentative one, suffering from a kind of digital schizophrenia.
His vision highlights a fundamental tension in our own digital reading and curation habits. We are all, in a sense, trying to build our own microcosmic "World Brains" within apps like Obsidian or Roam Research. We tag, link, and file away fragments of the digital expanse, attempting to impose a personal order on the chaos. We are the curators Wells called for, but our jurisdiction extends only to the borders of our own devices. The grand, unifying project has been replaced by millions of isolated, personal knowledge management systems.
Wells’s unindexed world is still with us, not because the index doesn't exist, but because it is simultaneously too vast and too personalized. The promise of a single, shared understanding has given way to a labyrinth of personalized feeds and algorithmic realities. We have the technical framework of his World Brain, but we lack the shared purpose and the trusted curation he believed were essential. As we add another note to our digital commonplace book, we are, perhaps unconsciously, participating in a grand, fragmented experiment that H.G. Wells dared to imagine—a dream of total knowledge that we are still learning how to handle.
